El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero took an early lead over a challenge from his council colleague Norma Macias in Tuesday's election.
With only some vote-by-mail ballots counted, Quintero had a single-digit lead over Macias.
Though she is not up for reelection herself, Macias opted to run for the mayor's seat held by her colleague after a year of conflict with Quintero on the dais.
