SOUTH EL MONTE >> For the past nine years, city leaders have advocated a straight-shot extension of the Gold Line Eastside extension roughly along the 60 Freeway from East Los Angeles to the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, while southeastern cities such as Whittier and Pico Rivera want the train to come south, hooking into an east-west alignment along Washington Boulevard.
