Many Pasadena people have had close ties to Santa Catalina Island. An ad in the The Pasadena Star-News in 1919 said that William Wrigley, then the new owner of the island, wanted "homey" people to buy lots in Avalon, not renters. "They will come year after year to greet their neighbors and join them in building a community that will be famous not only for its sports and beauty but also for its substantial, congenial, and clean living citizens," Wrigley wrote to his fellow Pasadenans.
