During the height of the space race in the 1960s, the average age in the control room was under 30. Today, the aerospace industry averages closer to 50.
Some experts predict more than half of the industry's employees will hit retirement age in the next five to 10 years.
That gap is putting pressure on some of the industry's biggest corporations to change, particularly as booming tech companies like Google and SpaceX draw away talent, according to Erik Antonsson, Northrop Grumman's corporate director of technology.
