Bill Johnson, Olympic ski champion, Canoga Park native and Van Nuys resident, dies at 55

He became known as the flip, fearless flier from Van Nuys when he gave the United States its first-ever gold medal in men's Alpine skiing in 1984.

That's what made Bill Johnson so admired by fans, especially in Southern California.

"He was a regular guy from California who did all the stuff we all loved to do," said Rick Herrick, a skier who owns radio station KBHR in Big Bear.
