WHITTIER >> The Whittier College student government has passed a bill against acknowledging Columbus Day in an effort to abide by the teachings and moral code of John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet and abolitionist for whom the college was named.
The 18-member student senate of the Associated Students of Whittier College unanimously passed a bill asking the president of Whittier College, as a Quaker Institution, to no longer recognize Columbus Day in any capacity and that a conscious effort be made to celebrate Indigenous Peoples.
